ATI 9600xt: how to change primary display?

I cannot watch movies on the tv-out using mplayer, because I see only the playback window frame and a black area inside instead of the picture.

Someone said it is due to the fact ATI cards like mine can only do overlay on the primary display device, which happens to be a TFT monitor and not the tv in my case.

I wonder what is the solution?
Is it maybe possible to swap primary and secondary display devices on the fly?

How do you use your ati card to watch movies on your tv set?
