Unhappy Asus L3k series, sis740 graphics and I can't see X

I really tried everything, even the well known working configs found on linux-laptop site but none seems to work.
LCD frequencies are ok (even if I had to suppose because no specification is given from Asus), "sis" generic driver is selected ma but when I start X the screen shows coloured vertical lines the changes colours as time goes by.

Maybe I'm missing something importing but I'm new to linux on notebook, can you please help me?

Had the same problem with my L3H series (sis650). The following solved the problem for me:

Section "Monitor"
HorizSync 15-61
Identifier "Monitor[0]"
ModelName "Unknown"
Option "DPMS"
VendorName "Unknown"
VertRefresh 30-90
UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection

Section "Modes"
Identifier "Modes[0]"
Modeline "1024x768" 71.39 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 777 802
Modeline "1024x768" 81.01 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 777 802
EndSection

Section "Device"
BoardName "SiS650"
BusID "1:0:0"
Driver "sis"
Identifier "Device[0]"
VendorName "SiS"
EndSection

Let's hope this (or slightly edited) works for you too.

Also the version of XFree is important. You need 4.3.x, not 4.2.x.
