Assistance Requested: Hardware selection for linux servers
Greetings:
I was unable to find a thread containing this question. If I have missed an applicable thread please post a link and verbally abuse me for being stupid. ;) I am a Linux newbie but I am pushing hard to do all my computing on Linux. I want to set up some servers for experimentation and eventually to provide myself with remote access to my network for file storage, etc... I have been looking at the current hardware available and would like to get some suggestions before I spend any cash. I am currently looking at the Shuttle SK41G bare-bones systems which are very inexpensive but lack ECC compatibility. My priorities are as follows: 1. Reliability 2. Cost 3. Noise, Space, Speed Any and all suggestions are appreciated. the_halfling |
i been lookin' at this link and that box looks like a really good deal for a home server, man... i'm thinkin' about getting one myself now!!!
=) i'd put a duron on it to keep things a little cooler... even the lowest-powered duron on the market today is like way more than enough for the stuff i do at home... an athlon would be overkill for me... did you already make your mind up as to how much memory and cpu power and disk space/speed you'd give your box??? either way, linux would probably be more than happy with anything you throw at it in that department... =) |
SK41G
Yeah, it does look like a sweet little box for home servers.
The only downsides I see are: 1. It lacks dual-NICs. This is not a necessity but is always nice. 2. It does not support ECC RAM. Perhaps I am being paranoid but I would like to maximize uptime. I have not decided on other hardware yet. I am trying to resists the urge to over-build. =) That is a big part of the reason I posted here, hoping that someone else had recently built some home servers and I could learn from their experience. Thanks for the post. the_halfling |
