Appending 'vga=0x317' to the kernel line in GRUB

This are the specs of the computer
Intel PIII 1GHZ
256MB
integrated INTEL graphic card.
XUbuntu Feisty Fawn.

I've appended in GRUB's menu.lst file the following code in red:
Quote:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-lowlatency root=UUID=17b37d8e-a3e6-4784-b17b-5b018fbe8c5d ro splash vga=0x317
But upon bootup it says I have specified an invalid resolution and that the only valid resolution are somewhere in the 180x120 range.
Is there a way I can fix this?

btw. When I am in X I can run resolutions up to 1600x1200x24.

Code:
tom@ubuntu:~$ lspci -v |grep vga -i
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA])

Generally the resolutions you have to choose from during boot, which is normally a framebuffer console, cannot be compared to the resolution you can achieve when in the X environment. Also, with an onboard video card, the choice can be even less.

What mode or resolution is 0x317 supposed to produce?

It appears that the 180x120 sort of thing would be a row x column figure (albeit with pretty tiny text), as it is ridiculously low for any normal grapical display.
