aopen dvd writer can read CDs but not DVDs

Hi there,

I just installed RedHat Fedora Core 4 and haven't modified anything.

My DVD recorder reads CDs, but not DVDs. When you put a DVD in the drive, an icon shows on the desktop labeled "CD-ROM" (not DVD-ROM) and when I try to open it, it's empty.

I've tried this with a data DVD that was burned on Windows, and also with a store-bought DVD movie. Same result.

My DVD recorder is " AOPEN DUW1616/ARR ". I've posted the output of mount command at the bottom of this post.

If anyone has any idea how I should even start finding the problem, I would really appreciate it Thanks in advance. I'm not a programmer or network admin, I'm a musician, going into Linux because it looks like Planet CCRMA is a good way to do pro audio. So yeah, I may say stupid things here and there... don't be too surprised. =)

[fr@bellafonte ~]$ mount
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw)
/dev/proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/sys on /sys type sysfs (rw)
/dev/devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/hda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)
/dev/shm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
sunrpc on /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw)
automount(pid2297) on /misc type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=2297,minproto=2,maxproto=4)
automount(pid2299) on /net type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=2299,minproto=2,maxproto=4)

First as you stated the label is "CD-ROM" which is nothing to be worried about afterall it is just a label. If you want to you can change it, but lets get some information so the issue of mounting of DVD media can be resolved.

Please post the contents of your /etc/fstab and /etc/filesystems files and the output from the command(as root from the console or xterm session);

cat /var/log/messages | grep CD

Just so you know, sometimes with 'burned' DVD media from Windows is not readable by Linux because of the filesystem used on the media. The store-bought DVD movies should be readable (and playable) for the most part. What does the (as root) command 'mount /media/cdrecorder' minus the single quotemarks show when a store-brought DVD movie in inserted?? Wait a minute or two after inserting the movie before typing the command.

thanks for taking a look, Lenard... I said earlier that I hadn't modified anything since installing Fedora... not strictly true anymore, I installed the Planet CCRMA pro audio packages, and the MPlayer rpms + dependencies and codecs. But no change in behavior since doing those 2 things.

Here's the stuff you asked me about, thanks again for any insights. -F.

OK, as far as Linux is concerned /dev/hdc is your AOPEN DUW1616/ARR, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive. The /etc/fstab entry for the drive looks pretty much normal, all good so far. Your /etc/filesystems file seems to be missing the entry for UDF filesystems, which is the problem. Without it no mounting of udf formatted DVD's from Windows or any of those store-brought movies.

As root (using your choice of text editor) add the missing udf entry to your /etc/filesystems file, example below;

$ cat /etc/filesystems
ext3
ext2
nodev proc
nodev devpts
iso9660
udf
vfat
ntfs
hfs

Thanks a lot for the tip, Lenard!

I added udf to /etc/filestystems, which must have been a huge part of the problem.

But there must be something else wrong too, I still have the problem. This is why I've tried so far:

- added udf to /etc/filesystems
- verified libdvdread is installed
- tried changing "auto" to "iso9660,udf" in my /etc/fstab. When that did nothing, I changed it back to "auto".

Other things: I just now noticed I get I/O errors on boot, relating to /dev/hdc, which I guess is the drive in question. So I was thinking maybe a bad cable? The only thing that's weird about that is it still reads CDs. You'd think if the cable was bad the whole thing would just stop responding.

Also, no idea what it is but there is one routine that fails on shutdown, "NFS Locking". Don't know what that is.

- Could a bad IDE cable cause my DVD recorder to stop recognizing only DVDs, but still be able to read CDs?
- Are there other system settings I can check that could be related to my DVD recorder?

Thank you so much...

The libdvdread package is needed to play the movie DVD and is not releated to the mounting problem.

Use the auto, my entry looks like;

Code:
/dev/hdc          /media/cdrecorder       auto    exec,noauto,users,ro 0 0
You can try the entry above, but remember yours (should) mount to /media/cdrecorder1

What errors, this may be important... Can you provide the details. Have a look at the /var/log both the dmesg and messages file for possible clues or messages.

I'm not sure, but I do not think it is a cable problem. But it might be a jumper issue with the two CD/DVD drives, one (the DVD burner) should be jumpered as master and be at the end of the cable. The other should be jumpered as the slave device on the IDE channel.

Also check the system BIOS and see if you can may be set the DMA mode for the IDE channels (IDE0 and IDE1 or Primary and Secondary).
