Question Anyone running Linux on a Dell Studio Hybrid?

What distro? Any problems? Looks like a neat piece of hardware for casual use.

Thanks,

Ken

Hit F4 before you install and select Safe Graphics mode...
You'll get lackluster Vesa video support. No sounnd through the HDMI port yet.

The Intel X3100 graphics chipset is very new and not fully supported by most distributions yet. There are Debian experimental drivers that appear up to date, but no distro is shipping standard with the latest drivers for this chipset... The sources have been released by Intel for it,... but no Linux distributions are supporting the latest version of the driver (xserver-org-intel_2.6.1, I think). Plus, the dependencies make it so that you have to pretty much compile your Xserver yourself or roll your own distribution, upgrading to the latest Xorg core.

You might have better luck with Debian Lenny... and trying to add the experimental repository to your apt source list. That's what I'm going to try...

It's a really nice machine,... otherwise...

Success!!!

The trick is using one of the RPM based distro Xorg tools to create a basic xorg.conf file. That, and install Ubuntu Jaunty...

The way I solved my problem;
Installed Ubuntu Jaunty, which features the latest xorg builds for the intel chipset, removed all other drivers but the Vesa stuff...

Launched Suse 11.1 Live and used Sax2 to build an xorg.conf file. Saved that file to a USB drive, and then tranfered it to the Ubuntu /etc/X11 directory by running gedit with sudo.

You will not get good resolution in Suse,... but when you switch back to Ubuntu Jaunty, the resolution will be much improved owing to the Intel 2.6.1 drivers in Jaunty...

I recommend a few edits afterwards to clean up the Sax references in the File,... and to eliminate references to any display modes included if your monitor doesn't support them. Also add the option from the Intel man document found on the Internet to increase your the texture memory window to something like 64MB.

I can supply my xorg.conf on request.
