Question Anybody know of a good Linux-compatible ADSL interface card?

Does anyone know of a good Linux-compatible PCI-based ADSL interface card that has an analogue port for direct connection to the line and not just an ethernet port which would require an ADSL modem or some other form of terminator?

Reason being I`m looking to build my own router for my small home LAN rather than buy one as I have a spare box here with a couple of NICs in, plus I`m a techie so it will be interesting, and will keep me out of the pub for a while!

I`m running Slackware 10.0 with the 2.4.26 kernel (which I could upgrade easily enough if needs be).

Thanks in advance.

good luck...

and not that i'm an expert here... but...
seeing as how i haven't really seen any popular dsl hardware other than 'modems' which generally allow usb/ethernet connectivity...

couldn't you just go ahead and setup your router using ethernet, and have the modem pass the ip to your box?

or do you really want to punish yourself?

I believe you need the adsl modem to surf the net. Not sure though, I have a cable connect. What are your speeds on that adsl line?
I know that you need a wway to communticate to the network, so I'm gonna say you need the modem. The line would plug in to the modem, then to your firewall box.

Thanks for the replies!

I don`t have an ADSL modem device which is compatible with Linux and this is my problem (part of anyway! As this is what I`m after, I know they are available -a sort of internal ADSL modem that will work with Linux), I currently use an (unreliable) USB modem device which is connected in to my WinXP box and that connection is shared to the other machines, what I would ideally like is to have a dedicated router with something like iptables filtering on that would connect my LAN to the Internet by forwarding packets from say eth0 on the router to the ADSL card on the router and then out on to the Internet. I don`t want the WinXP box hosting the connection itself as it gives me much more flexibility having a seperate Linux based router.

Plus I`m a network manager and systems admin and this scenario would let me try out possible scenarios before letting them loose on my corporate networks!

yeah... i would 1) buy a DSL modem that has ethernet capability, and use that to establish connection with your ISP. then 2) install/configure a linux router directly between your modem and the rest of your network. then 3) pass the external IP from the modem to the linux box (making the modem all but transparent on your network)

Thumbs up

Yep, I think thats what I`m going to have to end up doing if I can`t get what I`m after and it would do the same thing anyway.

Thanks for your help guys!

I've done some googling and they are about the same price, with the pci one being more expensive.
Gotta agree with secesh on this one. external modem to firewall box.
