Any tools to measure harddrive health?

I have noticed in the past few days that one of my drives makes a 'click' sound and the drive led on the case comes on for around 10 seconds.

I don't know which drive is causing it - both are quite new. There doesn't seem to be any system slowdown but the noise has got me worried so I've backed up a few dirs to DVD just in case.

I have looked for disk drive health software but I can only find windows progs. Anyone know of some for Linux?

By far the best disk diagnostic programs are put out by the disk manufacturers. Go to your manufacturer's web site and douwnload their diagnostic software. They usually run from a bootable DOS floppy.

You can access the drive's internal SMART functions with smartmontools. You should be able to read what the internal health monitor reports and/or run some built-in tests with it.

Thanks, I'm looking at smartmontools first. The diagnostic software I got from Western Digital looks like it needs windows running to install to floppy.
