Any body using latest Linux ATI Video Driver 3.7.6 (as of 3/10/04)?
 

Has anybody got these latest drivers to work on Mandrake 9.2 or any other distro?

Reason I'm asking is that I will be building a new computer soon and am thinking of getting an ATI 9600XT video card. I plan to dual boot between XP (mostly just to play games) and Mandrake 9.2 (for everything else).

radeon 9600 xt works with version 2.8
the key was to not compile DRI support at all. then try use external Agp modules.

Don't do it!!! I just built a new computer and bought a 9600 myself. I don't consider myself a noob at Linux, and I have been trying to get the damn drivers working for three weeks now. I STILL don't have it done, although I am getting close. Just spend the same amount of money on a NVidia card and save the hassle. OR, just buy an NVidia and I'll trade with you....

Thanks for the advice peeples, I might just follow it as configuring the nVidia 3D drivers to run on Mandrake was a little scary for me already... specially when I had to edit XFree86-4 using vi off the console.

The only reason I wanted to get ATI for my next PC is because they seem to be better for games on XP (with AA and AF turned on) for the same amount of money. But if it is even going to take me a couple of days just to get it working on Linux, it might not be worth the hassle.

Will using these external AGP modules enable 3D acceleration? Also, I am just wondering what goal ATI hopes to accomplish by releasing drivers which don't seem to work properly... it is not good for their reputation in the growing Linux community.

The ATI driver readme states that 3d acceleration not supported under linux and similar threads in other forums confirm this with games having very poor performance in linux compared to windows due to this fact. Just FYI

I've heard a lot of people say how the radeon drivers are hard to get working. I don't understand it though, I had them working on mandrake 9.2 with a 9700 pro in a few minutes. Also, 3d acceleration was working well enough for me to play America's army and ut2004, albeit at a relatively slow frame rate (40 fps). Is there some kind of difference between a 9600 and a 9700 pro that would make installing it on the latter easier?

Have you tried the recently posted ATI drivers (ver 3.7.6)? Also, unlike nVidia's website where they post their driver's for downloads, I did not even find an install guide off ATI's website.

It would also help folks here (like me) for you to outline what it is you did to get the drivers running in a "few minutes". Surely getting it installed in a few minutes required issuing just a few shell commands and editing a config file or 2... Perhaps you can share them with us.

For me, I killed X, then I ran rpm -iv --force <name of driver>, and that did everything I needed. Make sure you have your kernel sources installed, I notice a lot of newcomers don't know to do this, and then don't understand why the driver won't install. After you install the rpm, you have to run fglrxconfig, and then you shouldn't really have to edit the X config by hand at all.

hello you say you run rpm -iv --force..... but from what? the console is containing nothing
we don't have any window open, and nowhere to find a directory properly made
(we are new comers! like you say!) try to imagine how lost we are! i'm just in need of running widely with linux but i'm blocked for uggly driver! i cannot connect the net, i cannot open a damned desktop! please!! let us join you people!

Ok, guess. here is where wishes comes true from now on for ati radeon cards.
The kernel all of you are running maybe not supporting 3d acceleration. However the driver from ati does SUPPORT 3D ACCELERATION!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't know which bad site which says that. But ati didn't say they don't support 3d support! It's up to which dist. of linux you are using!
I am using redhat linux 9.0 and got no problem getting my asus a7n8x deluxe mb & 3d agp working!

You might not be a newbie regarding the using of linux. But you might be horrible at dealing stuff with X etc...

so, here is the solution for all of you!

1) if you are using any kernel that comes with the order dist. like mine red hat linux 9.0. I have to recompile my 2.4.* series kernel to get my card working! Which is a problem with kernel-2.4.20-8
2) make sure your kernel 's "DRI Support" WASN"T CHECK!!! That thing will mess up the whole thing of getting play game on your linux box.
3) make sure your kernel was compile with the support for both your motherboard and your video card!
4) Always compile as M or modules for support of your video card and * , buildin for your motherboard!

Also, for which driver was the best. all of them are ok either from ati.com or http://www.schneider-digital.de/html/download_ati.html
THe neofire driver i think will get ya to 3d right after your install and configured it. but i don't like it because i can't play my tux racer when i was using that driver.

for the driver update issue, i don't really recommand you update your driver until you see something real attractive or some real thing. Like if they got a new update or fixed the problem with card 9800xt.
please don't just go there to get you a little extra frame, instead a bunch of work for you to get work again!

Bonjour fafoimagne, I think you need to do a bit more research as your problems seem to be not just with the video drivers. You can do a search on this site about your hardware (the Hardware Compatibility list) and see if anyone has a similar setup to yours and what their experiences were.
