another "device /dev/dsp can't be opened (device does not exist)" in DEBIAN, woody
I've just had a walk down the testing branch on Debian 3.0 , and is back to stable woody. Compled 2.4.22 kernel with the last config file that worked really great.
And everything seemed just fine. Pondered a bit around to get the Nvidia card installed.. *was editing the wrong X config file* But things are mostly working apart from: This message comes up when i start kde, "Error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device) The soundserver will continue, using the null output device." Seems no one have ever seen that... Yesterday it worked fine under Debian Sarge, now it has turned into a SilentBlaster Live 5,1 oem card. I get that same error message as well. Do you get alot of modprobe errors when your kernel first starts its boot? Ive asked for help on this in the General forum, and no one has been able to help me yet, mabye we can help each other

Yepps.. there's a lot of modprobe errors too....
I've taken a lok at the sb-card and it seems ok, sadl i got no chance to test it on another pc right now. So now i'm trying to get the onboard Legacy/Via card to work. Witht the same problems...... *sighs* I got a feeling that my soundcard died on me the other day.. First it played mp3's ok,,, then it suddenly just gave a scratchy sound out.. And everything on my pc froze totally. I hoped that it was just some of the files that had died. But now i dont know. I've been recompiling the kernel so much now to get this working that i'm starting to know what to do without looking at the screen.. *smiles* Seems tha something good comes out of this problem after all.... *want's sound so that he can play games again* |
Do you get modprobe errors right at the start about 'cant find char-something' too? I get alot of those, then alot of error messages about supermount on my other partition, which I can fix. On top of that, it keeps messing with my CD rom drive, so that doesnt work? Any of this happening to you?

I got a soundblaster live 5,1 card + a AC97 onboard chipset (that's disabled)and Yepps.
I do get a lot of can't locate mod "something" can't locate mod "other" at startup... I gave up and reinstalled evcerything last day and Oppps? Had to do a kernel upgrade to 2.4.22 'cause of my home directories etc... Wow? Suddenly my soundcard was listed and seemd to work fine.. The only problem was that my smc(tulip) card wasn't working... So it seems that i either can go online or have sound.... I'm still working at it and i'm getting good at compiling the kernel at least :) *have no idea how many times he have re-compiled it now* I'll see when i get home tonight if i can get any further on it.. |
there is a codec in the sound tab under xconfig that I enabled that got rid of that error message and made mine work. You might want to try that. Being a laptop, mine had the AC97 chipset too, and its just a matter of knowing which things to enable to make it work I guess.

Hopefully i've gotten down what i need to get x started when i get home tonight. xconfig? hmmm,,, i'm not sure if that will help me. *can't remember seeing any xconfig* I use dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 to set up my X, and then i of course edit it with nano so that most of it is changed :) Nvidia is a bit of a @£$@£ to get working, meaning that you have to re-install it after each compiling :) *loves to complain over small things* *Was pondering over the usb-mouse this morning and had to put in the ps2 conversionplug to get it working.* |
you can use 'make menuconfig' to get an "X-like" menu. It wont be the same exactly, but it will be pretty close. It will still be under the sound tab. Its called "something-codec" and I cant remember what the something is. If I find it, ill post it later on. I just wish I could get my USB mouse working :(

to be totally honest..... I have just a small idea of what i did...
I removed the scssi part, added the usb HID and support for max 4 gig ram and rebooted. Guess what? I scared the hell out of my gf when kde started with Metallica and Master of puppets :) Everything works.. I did remove al the cards from the pc an re-inserted them. I probably got some ghosts from the microsoft days left here :) |

I found you guys in a search cause i was having the same prob with the sound, i mean the device/dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device), the sound server will continue using the null output device, and I've been changing cards around, i mean it's an old computer and I have old computer parts laying around, and being a newbie, all i really got out of that thread here is you think I should take apart the computer and put it back together, i mean i can do that, and it's true this comp used to run windows and i finally got redhat 7.3 going and pretty satisfied with my new linux experience except for this sound thing.... im an experienced windows user but i have been inspired my Marcel Gagnê's book but i have gone as far as i can by myself with this sound server thing. If i dont here from you today, i will try the take apart thing |
Try downloading the Red-Hat kernel, instead of using a vanilla kernel if your doing that. I got he one from the Mandrake site, and compiled it with what I needed, and that cured all my ills, especailly all the problems with the drives, modprobe, and sound stuff. Just my 2 cents. :)
