(Another) ATI Radeon 9250 installation... almost there


Slackware 10.2
Kernel 2.6.16.18
Radeon 9250 PCI 256 MB
Intel 845G Mobo
P Celeron 2.5 Ghz 768 MB RAM

Well after pouring through this forum and other support forums, I have managed to overcome a lot of my ATI problems and am fairly close to getting my 9250 PCI card installed. I just have a few questions first. On one of the documents I was reading, the author mentioned loading the ati opengl drivers in place of the MESA ones by using a command opengl -update ati. Now like a lot of other stuff that has changed ('fglrxconfig' comes to mind) this command also doesn't seem to work. He then says that this command will probably be deprecated in favour of eselect and the author says to use eselect opengl set ati. However I can't see to use this command either, as both root or user. The article is located at [HTML]http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html#1_whyuse[/HTML]. Granted I don't use Gentoo so I didn't really expect them to work. The only other thing I can think of is my xorg.conf file which I generated using aticonfig --initial. Also I have recompiled my kernel a few times and was wondering, under Character Devices, I chose the Intel_AGP option as a module and left ATI Radeon Detection unchecked but I'm wondering if it should be the other way around. The thread I was reading said it was a motherboard detection option. Oh, I also installed this by using the Xorg 6.8 rpm and rpm2tgz'd it and went from there and did the usual make.sh and make_install.sh with no errors if that helps at all. Any help would be awesome, thanks.

Got it working! I messed around with my kernel a little more and set my character device options and everything exactly how the author of this guide did it:

For those who still can't get it working, the trick is to use the libGL.so.1.2 file from the 8.24.8 ati pkg. Then install 8.25.8 and replace the your libGL.so.1.2 file in /usr/X11R6/lib with the one from the 8.24.8 pkg. If it complains about it when you do a fglrxinfo (also mentions DRI), edit your xorg.conf file like so:
