amd64 and nvidia
Is there a way to install a linux (i'd prefer a debian if possible) on an amd64 arch and with the nvidia drivers ?
Even the standard "nv" drivers don't work... is it because my motherboard uses pci-express slots ? (I'm not sure, but i'm beginning to believe anything now...) I already tried (on a debian-amd64), but the best i obtained is that the nvidia module isn't recognized at the X startup... PS: I'm sure this thread will help some other people (regarding the poor documentation i've read about it), so if there is solution, i'll try to maintain it as much as i can. Thanks, Creak |
nv will not work for newwer nvidia cards, liek 6600 or 6800, as well 6600 is only supported by the most recent drivers, and barely at that. There is a bug in the newest nvidia drivers when you combine 6600 pci-x and 64-bit. This bug may be isolated to nforce4 chipsets though, nto sure. if you have this combo (like I do) then you are forced to disable the RenderAccelExtensions and use SWCursor (nvidia config in xorg.conf) there are several threads about this:

yeah, thi sis all over the gentoo, linuxquestions, and nvidia forums, there seem to be a lot of people who all got nforce4, amd64, and 6600pci-express all at once, like a flood of people discovering the same things over and over. help spread the word :-P
Just watch nvidia will claim it is an unresolvable bug and we will all be forced to upgrade. - Dsiclaimer, I love nvidia, used them alone for 6 years now. |
