AMD Opteron or AMD 64 dual core difference?
Does anyone have experience with Dual Core AMD chips?
What distinguishes a dual core AMD 64 X2 chip (such as the 4400+ model) from the Operton Dual Core 165 processor? Both have 1MB cache per core, both are x86_64, I think they have the same Ghz speed (if they don't lets say you were comparing to chips that _did_ have the same speed). Is the opteron "feel" faster to the user? Is it more reliable? Thanks |
One of the biggest differences (and maybe the only, I'm not sure) is that the Opteron uses "registered" ram which is much more expensive. I believe that there may be slightly higher memory latency, but it is much more reliable. That's why it's used in server applications.
The Opterons are a lot more expensive too. Unless you're running critical servers you're better off with an Athlon 64 X2. |
