AMD Athlon 900 resource allocation problem (Giga-byte GA7-IXE) network cards

Hello, I have the above computer and I'm having problems with NIC's having their resources allocated in Linux with this motherboard, have done all the usual (check BIOS, clear CMOS and configuration data and check resources are allocated automatically in BIOS, re-seated NIC's, tried different PCI slots, different NIC's, motherboard has latest BIOS).

NIC's work fine in Windows 2K/ Windows XP/ Windows PE - UBCD4Win and some Linux distributions (Knoppix and either Insert Linux or DamnSmallLinux)I can't remember which one of the two.

NIC's don't get their resources allocated on the following Linux distributions: I'm using an Intel Pro 100S PCI card, also tried using an Intel Pro 1000 PCI and a Netgear FA312.

Fedora 9
OpenSuse 11
Ubuntu
CentOS (the version bundled with latest Trixbox PBX)
FreeNAS (FreeBSD not Linux)

If I do a dmesg, my NIC is detected but states resources could not be allocated.

Here is a posting of my dmesg log output captured on a non working Linux Distro:-

SELinux: initialized (dev sdb, type vfat), uses genfs_contexts
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as it is really doing my head in and I don't want to give up with this PC as I would like to use it in a testing environment for Trixbox. Otherwise I'm going to have to stick with running it in VMWare with all the sound timing issues.

I have also tried installing some Distros with pci=routeirq using the additional Linux commands when it prompts you, and this didn't work either :-(

Tried taking all other PCI cards out, again no difference so put back in the NEC USB 2 PCI card, that is the only other card in the computer.

Many thanks people

It seems the I/O port range of the NIC is already reserved by someone else.

Please show the contents of /proc/ioports.

Hi, thanks for your reply, before I got the contents of /proc/ioports I thought I'd try booting up with Fedora Live 10 KDE CD, which hung with some kind of graphical glitch, so I thought I'd change the graphics card, which is a TNT2 AGP card, the heatsink on this card keeps falling off (it is only very small and keeps loosing it's stickyness)so I thought that could of buggered it.

I substituted the graphics card with a Voodoo 3 AGP card and then proceeded to boot up Fedora Live 10 KDE CD just fine and my Intel Pro 100 NIC was working! Happy days - I thought, so then I got my latest Trixbox CD out and proceed to re-install that, (the Distro I actually want to use). After rebooting the same thing happened! arrrrrrh!

Here is a copy of /proc/ioports as requested

I did try to disable every thing on the motherboard not needed i.e. USB, COM ports, LPT before my original post and even took the CMOS battery out to reset which didn't make any difference.

The resource that the NIC is trying to use is de00-de03 which according to the above is being used by the motherboard, which part though? This is really doing my head in now.

Many thanks for your time.

Cheers :-)

There are several ways (PCI registers, PnP, ACPI) for the hardware to indicate which resources are available or used by hardware devices.

It seems that there are certain versions of the Linux kernel that do get this wrong and assume that certain duplicate entries mean that the resource is reserved, not available.
There have been bug fixes related to this in recent kernel versions.

Please check which Linux versions are used by the distributions that work and that do not work.
You should be able to get it to work with the latest distribution(s).

Thanks for that, yep NIC now working on OpenSuse 11.1 but not 11.0, Same for Ubuntu 8.10 but not 8.04.

Have a shutdown problem with OpenSuse - does not turn the computer off, just turns off the disk. Ubuntu shuts down as it should.

Any ideas? Is this something to do with ACPI? Computer has the latest BIOS Giga-byte did.

Many Thanks
