alsamixer master volume controll doesn't work

My problem is this. Alsa has identified the output on my onboard Intel 82801BA-ICH2 as the headphone. At least I think that is what has happened because alsamixer uses the headphone volume control to change the volume. For whatever reason the master volume control is unable to adjust this volume, which I need in order to allow another program (mythtv) to change the volume.
Is there a way to get the master control to work?
I'm running FC2.

edit:
OK got it. I needed to add
options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=2
to my modrobe.conf that switched the master and headphone volume control.
I just needed the right words to google... which game me the right thing to look for on LQ.
