ALSA + Soundblaster + alsamixer + hiss fix


I have just installed Mandrake 9.2 as a dual boot on my gaming box, and of course it had a problem with the audio - annoying hiss from the centre speaker.
I already new about this problem on my desktop, but it's been about 12 months since I installed and had forgotten how to fix it.

*Edit: Both my computers use the Creative Labs Inspire 5.1 5300 and I get sound in all 5 speakers from both of these cards listed in this thread*

This newsgroup posting contains the key - mute the SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack with alsamixer.

Then adjust the Surround and other Centre options to suite your preferences.
I will admit some selfishness for this post - it'll make it easier for me to find it again
To store your preferences, issue
/usr/sbin/alsactl store
to restore them,
/usr/sbin/alsactl restore
