ALSA sound on more than one app at a time

Hey,

I'm using gentoo and KDE. I want to make my sound card be able to play sounds for more than one app at a time(e.g. both XMMS and video). I know my sound card can do this, because in windows, I have no problems. Does anyone know how to set this up??

Regards

you need a sound daemon... personally, i use esound on my slackware box...

operation is simple: once installed, set your apps to use esound for output... esound will merge all the input it gets and it will feed it to alsa... you can tell kde to use esound in the control center, at regular user-level... it's easy for other apps also.. like xmms, for example (Options | Preferences | Audio I/O Plugins)...

Thx win32sux,

I didn't use esound because its a native gnome thing, and I'm using kde, so I went for arts - works like a charm! (Tried to use JACK but it didn't work out). Your advice led me on the path of light :) Thx again

Using esound or arts is ok if you have a very fast system. Sometimes esound and arts screws up your computer. ALSA has a way to mix multiple sound requests into one. You just need to make or edit ~/.asoundrc. Look at the ALSA wiki documentation on dmix. It give you an example how dmix can be used. Almost every program supports ALSA. I never had a use for dmix because my sound card can handle multiple sounds at once in hardware.
