ALSA settings

Hello:

I have not been able to get sound from my ASUS M4N78 Pro motherboard.
I would like to now know the correct alsa settings. There is a Nvidia Geforece 8300 chip on it. According to the specs, it has VIA VT1708S 8 -Channel High Definition Audio CODEC. It is a fresh new install of ubuntu and I have unmuted the outputs in alsamixer.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Open a terminal and do:
Code:
sudo alsaconf
This enables the proper device.

Then:
Code:
alsamixer
Check again that things are unmuted and turned most of the way up. If that works then use:
Code:
sudo alsactl
To store the settings permanently.

I found the alsa upgrade script on ubuntu forums and upgraded hoping it might solve it. The upgrade was successful and I now have the current alsa driver. 1.0.23.

I also heard the drum beat at the first couple of logins. Then I don't hear that any more.

Now when I tried

sudo alsaconf, I got an error message saying

No supported PnP or PCI card found.

Would you like to probe legacy ISA sound cards/chips?

<Yes> <No>

Then it said the system would become unstable if I probe for legacy cards, so I quit without looking. It was found before.

I did do the alsa mixer and found the main mute and unmuted and maxed all speakers or ports out, but still no sound.

Please let me know if I can post other things to help.

Thank you for helping.

Your system doesn't see the onboard sound. A quick google turned up this from the ubuntu forums.

Sounds like your onboard sound may not be supported in linux. Maybe someone knows more than I do about this, otherwise you'll have to add a PCI soundcard.

Hang on, found this post in the openSuse forums that suggests that if your kernel is 2.6.28 or higher support is built in. Otherwise you can upgrade alsa to 1.0.20 or higher. Check your alsa version and upgrade if necessary and see what that does.

EDIT: Found this too.

Thank you for the info and links. Here are my kernel and alsa drivers.

Code:
$ uname -r
2.6.32-22-generic-pae
and

Code:
$ cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.
Compiled on Jun 2 2010 for kernel 2.6.32-22-generic-pae (SMP).
So, I think I should have the built in support and a good driver for it. Some people have been making it work. I am not sure if I need to patch it or how.

At the same time, I think I need a critical piece of information. I need to correct model information to add to alsa-base file. I just tried model=asus-dig and alsamixer blanked out.....:-) Well, we know one wrong model..
