ALSA Gentoo amd64 nforce3 5.1 only sound through one channel

hey
sys specs in sig
long story short
i do not get 5.1 surround when playing any music / movie. however doom3 gives me full surround on front rear and center channels
i am using the alsa 1.0.9 module
i can get sound out of the rear speakers but that is only with duplicating channels..my amixer output does not show rear-right or rear-left or center channels
nvidia ck8s is detected without a problem. i have the ac97 module in the kernel
version 2.6.12-r6
any info will be awesome
i have been looking at countless forums but to no avail
