ALSA fails after XOrg+KDE starts

I'm having a weird problem. At startup, ALSA works just fine. I can run 'aplay /.../foo.wav', for example, and it plays fine.

But once I start up Xorg+KDE, I lose audio. 'aplay' won't work Konsole, and after I return back to the shell, it won't work there either. I've checked KMixer, and everything looks fine, but even if it was a problem with that it wouldn't explain why it won't work once I'm back to the shell.

Anybody have this problem?

And, I hope, solved it?

Sorry, I realize I at least should have mentioned what the actual hardware is. It's CMedia AC97, integrated.
