Question alsa 5.1 centre/LFE/rear channels mixing

Hi guys,

I've got a Realtek ALC850 onboard sound card, running as the second card on my system. I'm trying to get my 5.1 speaker setup running correctly. I'm sure I've had this running once before but I just cannot get it right.

I currently have two configurations acting weirdly..

(my /etc/asound.conf)

Code:
pcm.!default {
        type hw
        card 1
}
ctl.!default {
        type hw
        card 1
}

The first is just running default:

speaker-test -Dsurround51:1 -c6

When I run this the rear left channel comes through the rear left speaker and subwoofer, while the rear right comes through the rear right speaker and centre speaker.

The alternative, is with my .asoundrc:

Code:
pcm.onboard {
        type hw
        card 1
        device 0
}

ctl.onboard {
        type hw
        card 1
        device 0
}
Where this:

speaker-test -D onboard -c6

gives me the centre channel coming through the centre and rear left, and LFE/Sub coming through the sub and rear right!

Okay.. so this almost makes sense to me, but not quite.

Can someone please give me some advice on modifying my settings to split the channels correctly?

Thanks

F

You're pretty near of getting it right
I followed following howto and got it works pretty fine
We can have Can I play stereo files over all speakers of my 4.0, 5.1 or 7.1 surround-sound setup?
