Alpha, i386, multi=arch, powerpc, sparc Which is my computer for configuring Debian?

When I install Debian Etch, the instructions and some options differ it seems regarding references I think to hardware, like i386 and alpha and sparc... How do I know which is right for my toying computer, and old "Hitech", Pentium 2, with a second hand 40gig HD?

For a Pentium 2 use the i386 architecture. Packages in the noarch category are usable on any architecture.
