Alienware Laptop / Slackware 10.0 Wireless network

I have a new alienware laptop with an atheros network card in it. I downloaded the madwifi driver for linux and installed that. I am trying to get linux to connect to my wireless router but it is not working. when i type ifconfig i just get a loopback address and when i do iwconfig i just get lo, eth0 (wired), and ath0 which is my wireless. Does anyone know how to configure wireless networking on linux? I have searched all over the internet and cannot find out how to do it with my wireless card's chipset.

Moving this one to the Hardware forum where it should see plenty of attention.
