alcatel usb modem (slackware 9)

ok i did a forum search first and didnt find anything helpful.
i use slackware 9
and have an altatel usb 330 modem

i followed the tutorial on this page

when i goto start the modem it all goes fine, when i type
ifconfig ppp0
it retuns information. when i type this before modem_run stuff i says device not initialsied (or something simliar)

but when i open browser it just says cannot find domain name.

i didnt re-compile my kernel as when i did the probe commands it returned everything that the tutorial said was needed.

thanks.
