Adding a local printer

Hello All!

I have been busy setting up my linux box as a server but I want to add a printer so that I may print to it from a windows machine via Samba.

I use Redhat 7.3. How do I add a printer to a Linux box?

First you need to get a driver for the printer (use the CUPS rpms).

Then you add the printer to smb.conf and it should work. Make sure you give everybody adequate permissions to actually use the printer.

I am Ok with the samba bit, the things is how do I add the printer in the first place? I am not very good with KDE or Gui's generally.

Since you have RedHat 7.3, you will need to install the LPRng RPM.
Because the version of Samba that comes with RedHat 7.3 does not support CUPS very well.

To add a printer, use the Printer Configuration GUI.
In the menu, it is located under System.
Or
Open a console window and type: printconf-gui
