Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Adding a 2nd Hard Drive?

Ok - I was wondering about adding a 2nd drive in my Linux box. My machine is strictly S-ATA and I wanted to add a 2nd drive just so I back up my home directory nightly. I have a cron job that checks my ~/ directory and diffs it against the 2nd hard drive I have and rysnc's the difference.

Basically, I am wondering if I back up all my important data to /dev/sdb1 which is my secondary drive, can I take /dev/sdb1 in another Linux machine, mount, map, and access the data or is /dev/sdb1 and all its data only accessible from the machine it was originally created and mounted from?

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19452 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1   *           1       18696   150175588+  83  Linux
/dev/sda2           18697       19452     6072570    5  Extended
/dev/sda5           18697       19452     6072538+  82  Linux swap / Solaris

Disk /dev/sdb: 160.0 GB, 160000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19452 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1               1       19452   156248158+  83  Linux

As long as the filesystem used is understood by the second host, everything will be readable. You may wish to consider owner and group-owner permissions beforehand, although that is completely fixable at the destination host. It will probably not become a bootable system disk, but it sounds like that is not what you are talking about anyway.
