Adaptors to connect desktop PCI devices to a laptop through usb or ethernet port

I know it is a long shot, but there is little to lose: Do generic adapters exist that allow any old desktop PCI device to connect to a laptop through a usb or ethernet port?

Perhaps with a little help from virtualization or emulation so the old device's driver thinks it has direct PCI access to the device through a virtual PCI bus?

Maybe serial PCIe devices are a little easier to pass through usb?

Never seen a usb extender in action. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...w&gclsrc=aw.ds

Not even sure this is what you mean.

I've seen pci to pci bridges and things like craylink but not any usb type.

So laptops have a socket for this nowadays? Maybe they have such a socket inside?
