AD1980 (AC97) does not work with Mandrake 9.1 ?

Hi

I have an Intel 82801 motherboard with integrated soundcard that works perfectly well on my Win XP (SoundMax audio) setup but remains silent with Mandrake Linux 9.1.

The hardware has been recognised by Linux and its picked up the Intel 8x0 drivers for it. I tried ALSA drivers but ./configure returns an error (=1). I've unmuted the sounds as well.

I read in an earlier post that moving the pins at the back of the box around might help, but I'm not sure if doing that might have other (read adverse) consequences and also reduce the output quality?

Thanks in advance for helping.

I have a working AD1980 on an Asus m/b. I'm using ALSA with the snd-intel8x0 module loaded on a Knoppix/Debian installation (kernel 2.4.21). For some reason the sound comes out via ALSA's 'surround' channel, so this has to be turned up in the mixer.

I'm not familiar with Mandrake, so can't be much more help than that. I've always had to use ALSA to get these AC97 thingies to work, but maybe Red Hat/Mandrake/SUSE have their own way of doing things.

Mandrake 9.1 AC97 audio probs, too

I've got the same problem. I'm running an ECS K7sem 266 board, with onboard audio codec AC97. I've got no clue how to remedy this. Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks!!!

There is a lot of discussion about Mandrake and AC97 on-board sound in this forum. I'd suggest searching the forum for the combination of these words and browsing around a bit.

It seems to me that if you can get ALSA installed/configured and set up to load the snd-intel8x0 driver you have an excellent chance of success with an AC97.

Otherwise the m/b manufacturer may supply a linux driver in some form. Or maybe Mandrake has a update/fix on its site.

But if you can't find a precompiled package to fix the problem, and are not happy tinkering with your computer, the easiest and almost certainly the most cost-effective thing is to buy a cheap soundcard of a well-known brand, plug it in, and disable on-board sound in the BIOS :)

Or you can switch your distribution. The presently highly up-to-date Knoppix/Debian live CD will almost certainly work with the "knoppix alsa" boot parameter. But is it worth ditching your experience with your current distro?

While browsing the ALSA web site I also found this link

http://freshrpms.net/docs/alsa/

which seems to be the official source of ALSA RPMs for Red Hat. Maybe worth a try for recalcitrant AC97s?
