Activate & Deactivate
 
I have an Internal PCI D-Link Modem in my computer. (Redhat Linux 9.0 [2.4.20-8]). Whenever I have to connnect to the internet, I have to activate my modem through the network control device program in linux. I use GNOME as well KDE.

I just want to know what is activation and deactivation of any device. Can I activate and deactivate it automatically.

as far as network devices are concerned they can be activated using
ifconfig eth0 up
basically there is a script for these in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/

and also have a look at the network script in /etc/rc.d/init.d
