Hi, When I boot up my computer, I get this error which it hangs on for about 5 seconds, then boots.

ACPI: Expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0.

I'm using Fedora 10, encrypted whole OS, hardware specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9850 2.5GHz (Black Edition)
Motherboard: ASUS M3N-HD/HDMI
Video card: ASUS EAH 3870 G 512MB
PSU: Thermaltake 600W
Hard drive: 500GB Samsung or Seagate
RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR2

Any ideas would be great! I think it's a hardware issue, as I've googled and it seems it may be with the motherboard, but I'm not sure and google didn't have anyone with any real answers

It happened when I installed Fedora 10, since day one

Try different settings for ACPI in your BIOS. It seems to be related to power management.

I've tried all different BIOS settings, and have updated the BIOS to most recent version. Still doesn't work. I googled around and it seems to be something with the BIOS that it isn't programmed very well and nothing I can do about it.

I'm thinking now, as it just seems to be annoying and doesn't affect performance, is there any way just to get this error message to disappear, or to as least not hang for about 5 seconds before moving on to the next process?

I'm not sure about that. However, I do have a question of my own - how do you get a copy of that message on boot?

After it goes through the BIOS, it's the first thing that pop's up. And it's the only thing on the screen, and hangs for 5 seconds.

Does it do that even if you don't have the hard drive connected (or just disable the hard drive in the BIOS)? I'm assuming it's precisely the BIOS and thus I will say it's very puzzling. You have a good motherboard - certainly newer than mine and I have no problems. Is there any chance you may have a bad memory module? Do you have an ACPI controller and would it be possible to test if it has some type of problem? I've seen a situation where a hard drive controller broke, but I dunno about an ACPI controller. Try logical things like removing the hard drive and booting, removing one of the memory modules (all of them, eventually), removing/replacing BIOS battery. You can get a new BIOS and chip from biosman.

Please do us a favour and as you go through troubleshooting steps can you just keep the steps in a text document so we know what you have and have not done? Thanks!

Thanks for your help, I've gone and tried testing these after your post:

After disconnecting the hard drive, and the error doesn't come up. It says "Book disk failure - retry, abort, fail" etc. So it is linked in with the OS. At one point I did have Windows installed, when it was pre-loaded, and this error didn't occur. So it is OS related somehow.

I tried taking out each stick of memory one at a time, used different slots as well, still the same error. With both out it doesn't load up at all.

I'm not sure if I have an ACPI controller. I haven't actively done anything. It is activated by default in the BIOS, and I can't deactivate it that way. It is a clean install of Fedora 10. No significant system changes. Happened since first boot.

I tried popping out the battery, and putting it back in. It resets my time and BIOS settings but that's about it. Does not solve the problem.

I've tried enabling / disabling all the ACPI functions in BIOS, changing states, everything like that. Enabling / disabling the "Cool & Quiet" functions of the motherboard.

I've tried plugging in / unplugging all the fans, to see if was something like that.

I've tried Googling everything. But keep finding my own post! Also this "IMO it is a BIOS bug and had better be fixed by bios upgrading." (But I tried that)

And I've tried the kernel parameter: acpi=off but that means my USB mouse doesn't work anymore and the computer doesn't shut down properly

_PSL method returns the device that can be used for passive cooling in this
thermal zone.
Unfortunately, the bogus AML code returns a non-existed device, \_PR.CPU0.
Just a one line change in AML code can fix this problem.

The only thing that may be throwing it I'm not sure if it's relevant but my hard drive is on IDE even though it's SATA harddrive. I didn't notice that in BIOS, I should have made it AHCI. But I don't think it's relevant?

temp1: +42.0°C (low = +0.0°C, high = +0.0°C) sensor = transistor
temp2: +39.0°C (low = +0.0°C, high = +0.0°C) sensor = transistor
temp3: +127.0°C (low = +0.0°C, high = +0.0°C) sensor = transistor

temp3 at +127.0 degrees celcius ... that's really, really hot! not sure again if it's relevant though

I have had similar problems with Debian Lenny and the AMD Phenom 9850.
In addition that that message, about half of the time, I get
[Not responding...] followed by a 5-second delay, 3 times repeated.
And then it boots up in only one core.

About 1/4 of the time, it boots up with 4 cores, but after a short time, stops listening to the USB keyboard/mouse.
And about 1/4 of the time, it boots up with 0 cores (the not responding... repeats 4 times or 0), and I have to power cycle.
Anyway, I would not recommend this CPU for Linux 2.6.26.

Well, if it makes you feel any better I'm having the same annoying problem too. Just as a side note no, it dosen't matter that your HDD is set to IDE, AHCI just allows hot swaps so it shouldn't matter.

Ok, the main issue...

It seems to be affecting all the Debian based systems, I tried a couple of different distro's today and they both said the same thing even after the obvious formatting of the HDD. It seems to be a kernel issue (at least that's what Fedora said, it gave me a stupid little bug message each time I logged in) and honestly, I'm not that advanced a user to even really know what that means. Ubuntu is also having the same problem, I'm going to try Mint tomorrow but since it is a spin-off of Ubuntu I'm pretty sure it will say the same thing.
