Acer monitor shifts display 1" down

Hi everyone,

I am new to Linux and I am having an issue now. I have an old system (socket a, athlon 1300, 320mb sdram, and a geforce 4 gpu with 64mb mem) and am trying out Ubuntu. I also installed Debian and I am encountering the same issues on Ubuntu as well as Debian.
The screen is shifted about one inch down. I've tried correcting it through my monitor menu but at 100% shifted downwards (or should I call it upwards??) the screen still isn't completly in the right spot.
I am using an Acer X222W monitor (no Linux drivers available)and the monitor works well on my other pc (with much higher specs and running Vista)

Has anyone encountered this problem as well or heard about it?

Help please....

Oh and btw I am going to shift to a more capable machine for Ubuntu but am searching out some nice (used) parts for it.

The machine's specs are fine; you don't need to worry about them at all. This is GNU/Linux, not WinDoze. Of course, more RAM is always nice, but other than that, you'll be happy enough with what you get (if you don't do a lot of high-end graphics/video stuff, that is).

I would advise to use NVIDIA proprietary drivers for the graphics adapter before blaming the monitor. You can use the System -> Settings -> Hardware Drivers tool for that.

Well I let it download and install the right drivers and it didn't work. It now even has a small pink square in the corner which says unknown.

I know I don't need very high specs but I am going to put together a nice HTPC running on Ubuntu (or any other suitable Linux version). The specs of this current machine aren't that well for running high def. movies with a bitrate over 10mb/s so I really need to make another machine.
This machine will be composed of energy efficient components, so I can also use it as a NAS.

What about this machine icw this monitor, anyone has a solution?

I am also going to install Ubuntu on my better machine and cahack whether it has the same issue. If so I will also let you know.

Edit: I am sorry for asking possible stupid questions. I am new to Linux and don't know very much about it yet.

Well I am now using my 'better' computer and the screen is good.

My better pc: E6600, Asus P5N32E-Sli Plus, 4 Gig Kingston HyperX memory, 8800GTS(G92).

So the question remains: What is wrong with the other pc?

It sounds like the video card might be bad. I'd try a different one.

I agree that something looks botched, but: Do you use a KVM (keyboard-video-mouse) switch? Depending on the making of those, display recognition may be problematic. I'd try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg first and try to fill in the monitor's specs by hand (choose "Advanced"). I don't know if it helps, though - AwesomeMachine's got a point there.
