Acer Aspire E560 Hardware Problems

I'm trying to install Linux on my Acer Aspire E560 Desktop PC.

Most Problems are caused by the Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 SATA II harddisk.

I've downloaded several Live-CD
Knoppix, debian live CD, Fedora Core 7 Live CD

I tried to install Fedora Core 6 but there was no harddisk detected.
I tried to install Fedora Core 6 (re-spin) but there was no harddisk detected.
I tried to install Opensuse 10.2 but there was no harddisk detected.

The Knoppix Live CD detected my Harddisk and it was accesable through media://mnt/sda1 media://mnt/sda2 media://mnt/sda3
But Knoppix don't found my ethernet on board
(Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller)

Now i'm stuck.

More details on my system:

Any help would be great.

Go into the bios and see if the sata channel can be set to legacy IDE or pata or something of that type. See if it will install. Then will go from there.

Bios S-ATA settings

In the ami bios:
Under Integrated Peripherals is the value of OnBoard PCI S-ATA Controller IDE (the only option to choose)
I can't find any other option with SATA.

What a poor bios listing.
Only other thought is install and IDE drive. Install to that. Then you can boot up with say http://freshmeat.net/projects/systemrescuecd/ and using the tools copy the drive partitions from the IDE to Sata. There are many post with better step by step details search for that.

No ideas as to what to try other than the latest release of the distro you choose.

Hi I'm also having the same problem my hitachi harddisk is not detecting my harddrive....please help me on this issue....if u hav found the solution
thanks-:)

]x-k[ 04-03-2007 02:24 AM

After Bios update - no improvement

I wrote to acer and got the latest BIOS Version,
I managed to upgrade my bios, which is very tricky without a floppy device.

But there's no change in the harddisk detection.

I'll try to check the diff between knoppix linx.config and fedora's redhat config, because the knoppix HD detection runs.

Maybe i'll find a hint there.

(Knoppix kernel REAMDE says that it is a nearly unpatched vanilla kernel.)

I also wrote in bugzilla.redhat.com:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=219043

No Hardisk detection, no Linux :'(

install pci=nomsi

Hello,

Try the boot option :
install pci=nomsi

For me, it's ok..my hard drive was detected succesfully
No error with SATA

Hi,

About the Acer 9500 Knoppix boot problem....

I debugged this much more than I planned to, and got it working. I am posting this to pass the torch on to the maintainers. (I did this some time ago - use at your own risk!)

Ubuntu does indeed boot correctly on the Acer 9500 laptop, except for the screen resolution. I copied the xorg.conf file that Ubuntu generated (via dexconf - knoppix uses something else) onto a pen drive. Then I booted via the knoppix 2 vga=normal mode, copied the xorg.conf into the Knoppix /etc/X11 directory, and did a "startx" command. As mentioned above, it boots, but the screen mode aspect ratio is not correct.

I did this with knoppix 5.0.1, and now see that (recent) 5.1.1 still has a problem. I noticed that a number of other live CD distro's had the problem.

Hope that helps!
