Ok - this seems to be one of the hardest questions to figure out in Linux (easy once you know how though .... )
Whats the process for mounting accessing a new peace of hardware in Linux -
Lets suggest the following situation:-
USB memory stick (my current problem) --- Random mount attempts on /dev/sda* let me mount this in RedHat but Debian is having
none of it and its time to actually LEARN how it works ......
I know Linux can SEE the device and Hotplugging is installed.
I know the various drivers both exist on the system and are being loaded by the kernel - if not I can modprobe them in when needed.
So I know that the system is configured to accept the device - the PROBLEM which applies seemingly to other mountable devices and
drives etc. is actually finding where the damn things are so you can mount them.
Commands like:-
dmesg
lsmod
lspci
Return lots of information which is damnably seductive in telling you that there IS the device in question on the system but no information about
where to actually get the thing and mount it.
I have tried the command:-
tail -s 3 -f /var/log/messages (see 90977
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d+second+cdrom)
Which SHOULD show some kind of assignment to sda in the case of my USBMemory stick - except it does not ...
What is the best practise for identifying how to access hardware like this and can it be applied to other devices (e.g. a second CDRW or scanner).
