A7V8X-X Built-in soundcard not working, RH9

I just installed Mplayer, to play some Divx files, and realized I don't have any sound in Linux!

I'm using the built-in soundcard from my ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboard. The audio devices control panel has this:

Vendor: VIA Technologies
Model: VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller
Module: via82cxxx_audio

Clicking, "Play test sound" obviously plays nothing,

. The light on the speaker doesn't even go on.

I'm using a pair of pretty simple, pretty old, but still pretty nice Altec Lansing speakers.

What's the section of "dmesg" look like around the driver load? Also, might want to check and see in a Mixer if the line out isn't muted. Its an alsa thing usually, but RH might have done something weird for the via82cxxx_audio chip.
