They will work with the 2.6 series, and with XFree86 4.4 and XOrg 6.7, but *not* XOrg 6.8, although apparently new drivers that wil solve all our problems, be stable and work with AMD 64s and XOrg 6.8 are coming out on Monday (so perhaps I might at last get 3D acceleration on my Radeon 9800 Pro).

Other than the ATi drivers, there isn't really much choice. The open source radeon drivers do not provide 3D acceleration for the RV350 chip which the Radeon 9800 Pro uses, as ATi won't release information to driver developers due to third party obligations. Perhaps SuSE offer their own Radeon package based on the ATi drivers that would be easy to set up?
