Question 56k External Serial Modem Problems with Linux No Dialtone

Hello im new to the forums and am just getting aquanted with Linux and just recently installed Mandrake 8.2, I have a 56k External Tidalwave Serial Modem made by Boca Research..... after I go into KPPP and setup my connection It recognizes my modem and everything, I can query it and it recognizes it fine and it does fine on the terminal test as well..... but when i goto connect I always get no dialtone detected. I have made sure that my line is secure and plugged in, and I have messed around with the countless settings in KPPP to see if I can get it to work but still reports back no dialtone. I did put my ear down to the modem itself and can here a dialtone for like 1 second then it cuts out......... if anyone has any suggestions on what i might be able to do i would really appreciate it. Thanks

Hi,

Try this:

wvdialconf /tmp/wvdial.conf

with the modem on. Then, if all goes well, look at the man page of wvdial.conf (man wvdial.conf) and setup the file /tmp/wvdial.conf with the ISPs telephone number, your username and password.

Make a backup of the old /etc/wvdial.conf file, if it exists and move /tmp/wvdial.conf to /etc/wvdial.conf and try and use wvdial, instead of kppp.

If you're very new and have no clue about what I'm talking about, then, tell me and I'll explain it better.

i had 2 external modems that were given to me, i gave up on the 56k external i think it went bad or something, i tried my us robotics external 33.6 modem and got on the net with it almost instantely, although i did have to uncheck check for dial tone before dialing and also input atx0 for the modem command string.......
