3D acceleration ATI on suse 10.0


Want to run 3D acceleration. Installed ati driver from ati.com/support ok. All is ok exept when I run programs like "TuxRacer" I get en error saying 3D acceleration is not available!

How to fix this problem, pretty sure Radeon 9600 should be able to play TuxRacer!! !

Thanks for any help!

Edit: The little checkbox is not your issue, I just tried it myself, I get the same error as you after installing the ATI Drivers from ATI, I can continue past the error, but the error is there. So there is a setting somewhere in a config, hopefully someone knows about it and can enlighten us.

I am still looking around for a solution here, I don't know if you got it working or not, but I found a few posts of people who didn't get it working, and no solutions yet. I haven't had time to do any serious digging, but good luck, and if you do find it, please post it here so others will be able to learn from it and configure 3d hardware acceleration for their gaming experience.

Suse people are working on the ATI drivers to offer package with YAST ONLINE UPDATE (YOU) for easy installation
as they do with the nvidia ones at this time..

When its released it will hopefully solve all the problems!?

As requested, moved to Linux-Hardware.

It may be worth your while to post up your xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) as there may be a setting in there which needs changing manually. Oh, and only post up the bits that aren't commented (lines not preceded by '#').

After doing some massive research, now that I had time... I came across a nice article which points out one of the main issues of the ATI drivers in Linux in general, but very Common with SuSE.

SuSE 10 uses Xorg 6.8, not XFree___. So in choosing the right fglrx package for the first install really matters. Once that is done, the Drivers will actually install properly, and when you run

it will actually run and create a new xorg.conf file. You have to choose about a million options, and then it overwrites your xorg.conf, so back it up before running the config. Then once you have a new one, you will have to make some changes, for instance your scroll button and side button(in my case) stop working, so you will have to compare what was changed in the old xorg.conf with the new one, and write those lines in to get that support.

Then you have to reboot to get the xorg.conf loaded with the new settings. This is where it got a bit funky for my taste, as now Sax2 can't change my mouse setting anymore, and limits selections for other things, and will overwrite the the xorg.conf reverting some stuff if you do it wrong. So it is best once you have the ATI, only manually edit the xorg.conf, or you will run into many issues upon rebooting, and realizing your ATI xorg.conf is gone. But assuming things are working right for you know, and your keyboard and mouse and whatnot work, run

3d acceleration does work, it is just massively picky. Check out this thread for exact steps to get ATI cards to 3d accelerate.
