33K ISA Modem

I live in a remote location and our phone lines are not the best we use RH8 Kernel 2.4.18-14 and a 33 kbps modem it gets the same speed as a 56K. Now we would like to upgrade to Mandrake 10.1 or Slackware 10.0 but they don't see my modem I don't want to buy a new one so can I get it to work with the new distros it's a internal ISA not a PCI and RH calls it a generic modem.

esolar; try that as a generic, if it works your in the net. other wise try http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/html section modems (open)& (expand) for complete detailed information on howto.

Hi I have just spent the last 3 hours reading how tos and with no success I installed Slack 10.0 it seems faster than mandrake.
I found out that I have a PNP modem on /dev/ttyS1 irq 3 port 0x02f8. so I used seterial and still kpp reckons it's busy.
Is their any one out their that can help.

esolar; busy means misconfiguration with connection within pc & online. recheck all those to correct then it will be online.
