32 bits, why O why won't it run in 32 bit depth


This is my first post

I am running Debian (4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 I think is correct) with 2.6.8-3-686 kernel. My video card is a Asus A9600Pro (128Mb on-board DDR) (should be enough hardware to run in 32 bit), using ATI loadable drivers. My mobo is an Abit IC7-G and i have a gig of DDR installed with a gig or swap space. I am kinda new to linux and all but I try to keep up. I am using GDM 2.6.0.8 and XFree86 4.3.0.1.

I have configured my XF86Config-4 in a dule head config so that the desktop is spaneding both screens (the big desktop). Well the only other information I can think of giving here is my XF86Config-4 file, and that my problem is that I cant get it to run in 32 bit. Thank you so much for any help. And I hope Linux stomps windows to the ground.

A lot of people that have not done graphics editing do not understand that 32-bit means 24-bit color plus 8-bit opaque channel. In Apple, Linux, or Windows 24-bit color is as high your hardware can go. The 8-bit opaque channel is also known as the transparency channel. Xorg and XFree86 have a library called Composite to handle the 8-bit opaque channel to make GUI programs be opaque, tranlucent, or transparent.

If you still think 24-bit color is not true color, take look at the math below.

2^24 = 16777216

If the graphics card tries to even output 32-bit color, it will actually output 30-bit color because there can not be partial bits. Bits have to be whole bits. The same goes true for 16-bit color.

16-bit color is 5-bit red, 5-bit green, 5-bit blue. <-- Just about any OS has this
24-bit color is 8-bit red, 8-bit green, 8-bit blue. <-- Apple, Linux
Windows 32-bit color is 8-bit red, 8-bit green, 8-bit blue, 8-bit opaque
32-bit color is 10-bit red, 10-bit green, 10-bit blue. <-- Only on XGI systems
