2Wire Garbage
 

I am hoping to install Gentoo on one of my desktop systems...fave distro. Anyways, I have a 2Wire USB POS that connects it to the HomePortal downstairs via 802.11b.

I tried to use ndiswrapper to load the 2Wire drivers, and I get a "no vendor" error, and ndiswrapper -l reports it as being an invalid driver.

cat /proc/bus/usb/devices shows the correct info for the USB adapter, it's recognized on lsusb as well.

I went ahead and got the orinoco drivers, as specified in one of the posts on this forum. I can't link because I have under 5 posts....

dmesg shows nothing other than my SCSI controller failing (don't have one...odd), and ndiswrapper reporting that the Windows driver couldn't initialize the device.

I've been using Knoppix 3.9 to test all this out, because I'm not going to install Gentoo until I get this USB adapter working, or save up for a PCI WiFi card.

Here's what I did:
ndiswrapper -i AmPsmNIC.INF
ndiswrapper -d 1630:ff81
depmod -a ;no light on the USB adapter
modprobe ndiswrapper ;no light on the USB adapter
ndiswrapper -l ;driver present, hardware present
iwconfig ;shows nothing

i've restarted, I've tried ndiswrapper -hotplug, I've tried the win9x drivers, I tried adding a Vendor=2Wire line to the originial INF file...but all to no avail. someone help me out on this one?

Hi -

I have my 2Wire HomePortal DSL modem connected to a Linksys WRT546S wifi router, and all the PCs in my downstairs LAN just plugged into the Linksys (as though the Linksys were just a hub). Everything's RJ-45 (no USB), everything "just works".

PS:
It turns out that the 2Wire modem supports both wifi and DHCP, and it works better than the Linksys WRT54Gs! So I'm using the 2Wire as my wifi base station, and I'm just using the Linksys as a glorified hub!

I'm not sure if you were just explaining your set-up, but it doesn't do me too much good. I'm using the Wireless USB adapter, not talking about the HomePortal, that can connect via RJ-45. The wireless USB adapter is only USB, and is being connected to my Desktop. It gets a DHCP lease from the HomePortal downstairs.

I'd rather not run wires around the house, so ethernet is out.

Actually, the points I was trying to make were a) 2Wire *does* make a good DSL modem/wireless base station (even though I admittedly have zero experience with their USB adapters), and b) yes, you *do* want RJ45/Ethernet where ever practical (for example, if you've got a segment with two or more PCs in the same room).

In general, I think an internal, PCI wireless NIC would be a happier solution, but you *should* be able to get your USB NIC to work. And it sounds like you're pretty much on-base with what you've been trying.
