2200bg wireless card not connecting

I just installed kubuntu 6.10 on my laptop, and I am having issues getting the wireless card to work. Here is some info on the card:

lspci:

02:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (rev 05)

lsmod | grep 2200
ipw2200 115652 0
ieee80211 35272 1 ipw2200

I saw some forum posts about firmware, and wanted to make sure that I had those installed. I found them here:

/lib/firmware/2.6.17-10-generic$ ls -l | grep 2200
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 191142 2006-10-13 14:09 ipw2200-bss.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 185660 2006-10-13 14:09 ipw2200-ibss.fw
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 187836 2006-10-13 14:09 ipw2200-sniffer.fw

At this point, I'm not really sure what to do next. When I run the wlanassistant utility that comes with kubuntu to try and connect, I start having problems. The utility sees the network that I want to connect to. It is a wep enabled network. In the utility, it gives me a couple options for configuring wep. The first is WEP mode and the choices are "open system" or "shared key". Next there is a box to enter the wep key. I enter the same key that works from windows on the same machine. Finally, next to the wep key textbox is a checkbox that says "ASCII". I am not sure what settings to use, but I have tried all combinations and nothing seems to work.

Is there something else that I need to do in order to connect to my wep network?

Quick update. I upgraded my installation to kubuntu 7.04. The wireless tool used is now knetworkmanager. I had the same issue with my wep network at home not working. I am using wireless right now on an unsecured wireless network at a restaurant, so the issue seems to be the connection to the wep network. Any suggestions?
