2 soundcards: Alesis io|2 and NVidia CK804

I am trying to get 2 soundcards running in my system. I know, the Alesis io|2 is not officially supported, but I had it already running using Slackware, so it is certainly running (with known limitations).
The second soundcard I am using is the onboard sound: CK804 (snd_intel8x0)

I want to have the onboard as my default soundcard, I just need the Alesis for good quality microphone records. I'm using Debian 4.0 (etch).
As long as the Alesis is not connected, the sound system is running fine. I played around with /etc/asound.conf a while until the CK804 was running as my default soundcard after executing "/etc/init.d/alsa reload".
I didn't succeed in playing anything to the Alesis device (this I had running with aplay using Slackware) and I have to reload the alsa after a reboot to get the CK804 running. Additionally, I never succeeded recording with the microphone through the Alesis (this was also working in Slackware).

I am quite new to Debian and I never fully learned the asound.conf possibilities - so I assume my problem is somewhere around this.

There are 2 main questions:

* How can I get the system accepting the CK804 as
the primary soundcard?
* How can I get the Alesis running?

/etc/asound.conf
================

pcm.CK804 {
type hw
card CK804
device 0
}
pcm.io2 {
type hw
card io2
device 2
}
ctl.io2 {
type hw
card io2
device 2
}

I know I need something like

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm io2
format S24_3LE
}
}

in the file, but I don't know in detail how to convert this to my config. I tried
pcm.!io2 {
[...]
}
but this also didn't work.

Here is some output, just in case this might be interesting:

# uname -r
2.6.18-3-686

# aplay -l

No, sorry. I still don't find the reason why my config-file from Slackware doesn't work with Debian. To be honest I never found the time really to understand the asound.conf-file. I am still using Windows in a second partition. What I don't understand: I found two different configurations working as far as the built-in soundcard works when the Alesis is connnected during multiple reboots, but as soon as I switch off the system and reboot it, the complete sound system goes completely mad...
