137GB max?

I have a new Maxtor HDD thats 160GB, and I put it into my redhat 8 computer but it only recognizes 137GB. I read about this somewhere but I don't know how to fix it on a linux pc. Help!

It might be that either your hardware or your kernel doesn't support LBA48, which is needed above 137Gb.

Does the BIOS recognize it as being 160Gb?

How old is the computer? Which kernel is "redhat 8"?

Use a controller that can handle more than 137 gigabytes. Maxtor controllers can handle up to 320 gigabytes.

Its probably the BIOS of the machine. Also, Maxtor is just shipping Promise controllers slightly rebranded, usually the PDC20269. If its BIOS, it will appear as a 137Gb drive in the kernel load, something like this:

hda: 16841664 sectors (8623 MB) w/512KiB Cache, CHS=1048/255/63, UDMA(66)

RedHat 8 shipped with 2.4.18, which can handle lba48, I've booted a 160Gig raid array with it before. Check to see if there is a BIOS rev for the board, if not, it looks like you'll have to get an add on IDE card.

Cheers,

I just decided to partition the drive into two parts and it works fine. I have a 100gb and a 60gb partition. Thanks!
