[Unmount] Shut down hard drive

Hi Folks!

I'm fairly familiar with linux nowadays but I have one more question that I can't find the answer to. If you unmount a hard drive, does it also shut down (stop spinning, off state)? If it doesn't, can you make it do so by using a command or so?
I have a hard drive here that I want to store files on but I don't use those files very often. The PC itself is always on but I want to keep my drive as long as possible so, switching it off is best. Any tips?

hdparm or sdparm might work, depending on your drive.
