I guess now I remember why I *dumped* fedora; it was because of this kind of crap. As for your partition things, you have some latitude on how you set up your partitioning scheme. My root filesystem and /boot are on the same partiition--it isn't an absolute must that /boot be in its own partition. But the thing you need to make sure you have is swap. A general guideline is twice your physical ram. But if you have a lot of it, you can get away with not allocating as much swap. (I have 1gb of ram, and my swap is only 1gb, and the system doesn't even use it) First thing you should consider is how big you want your root partition, and set it up first. Then do your swap. And then do the boot partition only if you want one. I think having /boot on / is easier because you don't have to worry about mounting it.
