KDE 3.2 supports real transparency. Personally I think it's horrible as it makes thing really difficult to read, but that's just my opinion.

I just downloaded GLMatrix from the TechTV site....saw it Screen Savers show.. haven't had the time to try it yet....but take a look...it might be what your looking for.
