Xwindows loads apps extremely slow.

After being a Redhat fan for more than a year, i decided to try out slackware 8.0...and all i can say is wow..its so much niceer . Anyway, the only problem i have encountered is this: GNOME loads fine, at a respectable speed, but loading any application like Mozilla or GNOME Configuration tools takes 20-30 secs! There is 128mb of ram on tha machine, and i havent had to use the swap yet, so i am not running out of memory. The HD does not thrash or even make a noise, the computer just sits there, the application in the bottom toolbar with the little timer, eventually it loads. Someone told me this is just Slackware..but i think there is something the matter. Any ideas? The machine is a Toshiba 1715XCDS laptop, 600Mhz Celeron, 128mb ram.. Thanks .

Mozilla takes a while to load whatever it runs on. 10sec on my box (1333 athlon). Don't know about Gnome conf...I use KDE and its quite fast, but I compile from source for my setup.

i somehow doubt that this is the fix you're looking for, but i thought you might find it interesting - it's a kernel patch that greatly improves latency and response time for apps.

http://www.tech9.net/rml/linux/

there was an interview with the guy who's doing the patch on slashdot a few days ago - here't the link:

if you're not into experimental kernels, then nevermind, but it works great - trust me

nautilus is becoming bloatware - which is a shame.

i've noticed sometimes when things are running slowly that i've got a few processes that haven't died yet - not zombies, just process that forget that they're supposed to pack up and go home. the kde ark package is probably the biggest offender i can think of, but there's a few others. ps -ef and kill...
