Xserver problem..X not working in RH7.3...error locating FontPath unix/:7100

hi gems,
I am using RedHat Linux 7.3 due to some technical requirements.
Suddenly my system is not booting with xserver. its not starting X.
The X is not at all working.
Its giving the following error:

"
could not init font path element 'unix/:7100', removing from list!
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

"
I am using RedHat Linux 7.3 with onboard Intel 845G graphics card.

What can be the reason? I even reconfigured the driver with Xconfigurator, its probing properly and showing the test screen..but when i restart it again, the X is not working. and its giving the same above error.

Guys, pls suggest a solution..Thank U.

Try removing the line which has "unix/:7100" in your X config file. It is generally in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

Thanx, but I am not getting it still.

Thanks,

i tried the option of removing the line from the XFree86Config-4 file. no use. still the problem persists..

Can i try loading the rpms related to XFree--fonts etc...?

pls be in touch in this regard,..thank again

I think I got the solution here
http://www.spinics.net/lists/xfree86/msg09383.html

I believe RH requires X font server to be running before starting X. So try putting the line back into the X config file and make sure you are running 'xfs' before you start X.

Hope this solves your problem.

Valerie.

xfs starts ok but failed to shutdown when the service is restarted

hi,
Thanks for ur reply.

I tried to start/restart xfs service....the result is like this

#service xfs start
Starting xfs.....OK.

#service xfs restart
Shutting down xfs....FAILED
Starting xfs.....OK

but after removing the line what u suggested...the welcome logo appears and it when i entered the login name and password, it just shows the welcome logo again, its not entering into the system. i think, as u suggested, there may be problem with xfs. i also refreshed the rpms related to xfs and XFree*..but i could not get it working.

Ponder some points in this regard which ever u come across.
Thanks again, keep in touch..bye

i had the same issue on RH AS2.1, you should search for 'Could not init font path element unix/:7100' and ' could not open default font 'fixed'', you'll get some old posts

this short read covers it well
