xorg.conf select single screen from list

Hey, I have a laptop with an external monitor. I want to run a single screen and prioritize the external monitor (DFP-1), but when it's not there I want to use the laptop screen DFP-0.

The only thing I can think to try is "ConnectedMononitor" "DFP-1, DFP-0" but this did not work.

I have an nVidia card.

Do you have the nvidia drivers ? If so, try using 'nvidia-settings', run it in a terminal.

I do have the nvidia drivers. I haven't noticed such a facility in the nvidia-settings setup... I prefer to manually edit the configuration file anyway as the graphical programs are never that good and tend to do things I don't like.

You're running Ubuntu and you don't like graphical programs, but instead prefer to manually edit config files. You sure you're running the right distro ?

In this case it's a little too complicated to do by hand, I recommend trying to run 'nvidia-settings' as root in a terminal, changing things in there and saving the config file. If not, try using 'nvidia-xconfig' (not graphical) with the option '--separate-x-screens' and if you want '--twinview'. Check 'man nvidia-xconfig' for more info.
