Xinetd - what it controls

I have been playing with qmail (from plesk control panel) and some others .. some of them requires me to restart this service..

what does this service actually do?

Google for "what is xinetd" is a good place to start.

Basically, xinetd is a "wrapper" of sorts for daemons. It allows you to control daemons through a centralized facility, rather than separate /etc/init.d scripts. This is over simplified, but Google will help with the details.

PS - "qmail" from plesk is not qmail, despite what Plesk tells you. They ship binaries that are obviously derived from qmail, but it is *not* qmail. It is also illegal b/c it violates the qmail license.

i have been playing around... and there were times i have to settle some "qmail" problem in plesk...

I went to find a bit more on xinetd...

here's what i got

Quote:

xinetd is not just an inetd replacement. Anybody can use it to start servers that don't require privileged ports because xinetd does not require that the services in its configuration file be listed in /etc/services.
meaning....? don't really get it.... :p
